My Future is the Past

Fritz Stier

As first artist in 2023, we present the Mannheim artist Fritz Stier in the gallery.

Opening: Thu., 23.02.2023 at 7 p.m.
Exhibition: 24.02.–26.03.2023

Children’s eyes gaze unsuspectingly and innocently into a world still foreign to them, some seem lost in thought. In the pictures shown here, the artist has reworked vintage photos of children taken around 1900, more than 120 years ago. The children’s looks bear witness to insecurities and fears, but also hopes and dreams for the future. A future of which those portrayed can know nothing, quite unlike us … those born later.

My Future is the Past is the title of the exhibition by Fritz Stier, who is presenting his latest cycle of large-format photopaintings at Wolf & Galentz. Fritz Stier has become known as a video artist, but for years he has also worked with reworkings of photos or video stills. His works are sometimes hard to bear, because they confront the viewer with situations that are existential: situations that we try to avoid in everyday life, even though we know that we will have to face them sooner or later.
