The 42nd exhibition at Galerie Wolf & Galentz invites visitors to explore the theme ‘What Berin Teaches Us – Cityscapes’. The focus is on works by Hagen Klennert, Barbara Putbrese and Klaus Jurgeit, complemented by other artists. The urban landscape serves as a starting point for an artistic dialogue on style, perception and the question of a specific Berlin aesthetic – between East and West, past and present.

Selection of artworks

Until 2017, Klaus Jurgeit captured unassuming Berlin locations with precise, almost photographic accuracy. His watercolours are now regarded as historical records. Barbara Putbrese, exhibiting at the gallery for the first time, focuses on minimalist, poetic urban landscapes such as views of rooftops. Her works are characterised by a sparing use of colour and an open, light-filled visual language. Hagen Klennert moves between East and West, has developed his own minimalist formal language and explores existential moods in his works.

The exhibition challenges common attributions of East and West art and brings individual artistic positions to the fore. It is complemented, among other things, by works by Ernst Schröder, whose brief yet influential oeuvre shaped post-war existentialism, as well as two works by Thomas Jakob Richter.

International perspectives are also incorporated, for instance through Yelizaveta Klutchevskaya, who lived in Moscow and Berlin and captured urban scenes in expressive watercolours. Eberhard Franke documented Berlin in detailed etchings, whilst Hans-Joachim Billib engaged with natural and urban motifs.

The focus is on Berlin as a multi-layered space of experience – seen through artistic observations and interpretations.
