Philipp Mager – Figuration of the Sky

26. 02.–17. 05. 2021

Painting, plexiglass pictures, linocuts, drawings

Solo exhibition of the artist Philipp Mager at Wolf & Galentz

In his painting, Philipp Mager delays. Loaded with doubt, his striking works emerge. They resemble each other in their mysteriousness and haunt our dreams.
Klaus Fußmann

The artist Philipp Mager grew up in Cologne. After graduating from high school, he completed a two-year traineeship in the painting department of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. From 1990 to 1997 he studied painting and graphic arts at the University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin, where he was a master student of Klaus Fußmann. Today he lives and works in Berlin.

Mager has an unusual command of an impressively wide range of techniques; painting in oil and acrylic, pastels and oil pastels, reverse glass painting, colour woodcut. Due to his productivity, he has a considerably large body of work. He thouroughly engages with all the artistic techniques he works in.

For many years he has focussed on a blending of New Objectivity with non-objective elements or also surrealistic ones – the blending results in the artist’s unique mode of expression that with its bold colours and decisive shapes is sometimes reminiscent of comic books. Mager’s works keep a fine balance between gloomy satire and a cheerful, even playful weightlessness.
