Birgit Bellmann
Birgit Bellmann (b. 1973 in Erlangen, lives in Berlin) is a freelance artist specialising in drawing/experimental graphics and object art. After studying at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Nuremberg and the École des Beaux Arts de Lyon, she graduated from the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee with a degree in Fine Arts/Sculpture.
In addition to exhibitions, she realises workshops and projects in the field of art education.
The focus on colour and its materiality runs through Birgit Bellmann’s entire oeuvre. Trained in the conceptual thinking of modernism, she largely detaches colour from a depictive function so that it can stand for itself and enter into a pure dialogue with other colours.
In her most recent works, which she has developed from dismantled and repainted aluminium blinds, the picture is created in the compositional process of interweaving strips of colour.
Three groups of works:
pattern pieces lacquer paint on aluminium, 2023
A large-format pattern mesh of two contrasting colours forms the basis of these works. The pictorial objects are in a fragile balance of centring and binding on the one hand and detachment on the other. This can be seen examplarily in the edges that extend into the room.

Three groups of aligned strips of colour form the structure of these works. By interpenetrating each other, they create an architecturally legible structure and a characteristic colour tone.
